Regression analysis studies how the expected value of a dependent variable changes as one independent variable changes, while holding other factors constant. It models the relationship between Y and X (or multiple Xs) to predict Y or to understand how Y responds to changes in X. The slope of the regression line tells you how much Y is expected to change for each unit increase in X, and in multiple regression you can isolate the effect of each predictor while controlling for the others. This approach is used for prediction and for understanding associations, not for simply comparing averages across groups, visualizing distributions, or calculating probabilities of events.
